"The Sacred Flame", a controversial play about euthanasia which dealt simply and formally with the right of a mother to allow her son to die when his life becomes no longer feasible.

This was Somerset Maugham's last major work for the stage.

The play ran for just over two hundred performances and showed a profit of 10,800.

Following The Sacred Flame Gladys was to leave the stage for some considerable time as she was soon to have her third (and last) child.
