Gladys Cooper appeared in "Macbeth" with her husband Philip Merivale who had put ten thousand dollars of his own money into the production.  However, the play lasted barely a month at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre and was a financial disaster.

Gladys struggled throughout her career whenever she was called upon to play Classical parts, but it never stopped her from trying.
